Uttarakhand is full of breathtaking mountain destinations, but two of its most scenic and peaceful places are Auli and Chopta. While Auli is known as India’s Skiing Paradise, Chopta is called the Mini Switzerland of India. Both offer snow-capped peaks, pine forests, and an unmatched Himalayan experience — ideal for nature lovers, trekkers, and adventure seekers.
Perched at an altitude of 2,800 meters, Auli is a stunning hill station located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. Famous for its ski slopes and panoramic views of Nanda Devi, Kamet, and Dunagiri peaks, Auli is a dream destination for those who love snow and mountain adventures.
Apart from skiing, Auli offers beautiful meadows, apple orchards, and oak forests — making it a great all-year-round destination.
This man-made lake is one of the highest artificial lakes in the world. It adds to the beauty of the region and helps in snow formation during the skiing season. The reflection of the Himalayas in its clear water is simply mesmerizing.
One of Asia’s longest ropeways, it connects Joshimath to Auli and offers a 360° view of the snow-covered mountains. The 4 km ride is an unforgettable experience for anyone visiting the region.
Auli is India’s top skiing destination. The slopes, covered with natural snow in winter, attract both beginners and professional skiers. If you visit between December and February, you can also take part in skiing courses organized by GMVN (Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam).
A short trek from Auli takes you to Gurso Bugyal, a beautiful meadow offering a close view of Nanda Devi and Trishul peaks. In summer, the meadow turns green and vibrant with wildflowers.
Located about 130 km from Auli, Chopta is a small hill station nestled in the Rudraprayag district. Situated at 2,680 meters, Chopta serves as the base camp for Tungnath and Chandrashila treks. Surrounded by deodar and rhododendron forests, it’s a peaceful retreat away from tourist crowds.
Known as the Mini Switzerland of India, Chopta offers a perfect mix of serenity, adventure, and spirituality.
At 3,680 meters, Tungnath Temple is the highest Shiva temple in the world and one of the Panch Kedar shrines. The 3.5 km trek from Chopta is short but steep and offers stunning mountain views along the way.
The Chandrashila trek (1.5 km ahead of Tungnath) is a favorite among trekkers. The summit offers a panoramic view of Nanda Devi, Chaukhamba, and Kedarnath peaks. Sunrise from Chandrashila is an unforgettable experience.
Just a short drive and a 2.5 km trek from Sari Village, Deoria Tal is a crystal-clear lake surrounded by forests. The reflection of the Chaukhamba peak in the lake makes it a photographer’s paradise.
Chopta is part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary and home to rare bird species like the Himalayan Monal. Early mornings are perfect for birdwatching and nature walks.
Both destinations offer pleasant weather in summer and snowy landscapes in winter.
Both Auli and Chopta are well-connected by road from Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun.
